Studying Multiple Outcomes after Aural Rehabilitative Treatment [SMART] Study
The SMART Study was established in 2011 as a framework for outcome assessments used to evaluate the impact of hearing treatment in older adults ≥ 50 years of age . Through this study, we hope to evaluate the cognitive, social, physical, and communicative functioning of older adults with post-lingual hearing loss before and after intervention with a hearing aid (HA) or cochlear implant (CI). We have provided copies of documents used in the SMART Study during participant evaluations. If you have any questions, please contact the research coordinator at SmartStudy@jhmi.edu.

4. Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)
Below are a protocol/scoring sheet and quick-reference chart for administering the SPPB, an objective standardized physical performance battery that we use for assessing physical functioning in the SMART study. In addition, we have included a link to the original NIA website from which we obtained these documents. The NIA website has a downloadable set of comprehensive information and instructions regarding the SPPB, including instructional videos on how to administer the test and relevant publications. Lastly, we have included a link to the chair that we use to administer the chair stand component of the battery. This chair meets the specifications of the SPPB (straight-backed without armrests and a
seat height of 45cm).
